The Monterey Bay Aquarium was established in 1977 by a group of marine scientists, local residents of Monterey Bay, California and members of the David and Lucille Packard Foundation.
It is devoted to the unique marine life of the Monterey Bay and fosters "...a greater awareness of the wealth of life our oceans hold. For only through this awareness will the oceans rise to the forefront of the worlds conservation efforts..." Julie Packard
This unique collection of ocean creatures are found in the waters off the coast of the Half Moon Bay which is where the aquarium is located. It is approximately 100 miles south of San Francisco.
